WATER

The Fedrigoni Group is vitally aware of the importance of water resources and is consequently determined always to adopt measures that help reduce consumption.
In paper-making, after pulp, water is such an essential element that is it considered a full-scale raw material.

Over the last 6 years, Fedrigoni has reduced its chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 23%, whereby measuring the presence of biodegradable substances in the water used in production provides a quality indicator.

The Group is determined to maintain this indicator well below the limits defined by industry guidelines of 5 KG/t, as can be seen in the following chart.
Protection of water resources and water quality
Chemical oxygen demand (COD) in relation to production volumes.

Companies in the Fedrigoni Group adopt technologies designed constantly to reduce the use of water to the quantities strictly necessary for the production cycle.

AIR

Over the years, the Group has expanded its presence on new markets and acquired new production facilities. At the same time, thanks to the constant focus on the environment and the use of the best production techniques and technologies, Fedrigoni managed to reduce CO2 emissions progressively and significantly, especially over the last 6 years, by more than 7%.

The installation of co-generation plant fired by methane gas at the main production centres means that the thermal energy produced is recovered and reused, thereby ensuring energy savings of up to 30% and a drastic reduction of CO2 emissions thanks to lower fuel consumption.

ENERGY

Energy is one of the most extensively exploited resources in the paper-making sector. The intense attention dedicated to this resource has made it possible to achieve high levels of efficiency in production processes so that over the last 6 years Fedrigoni has cut electricity consumption by almost 10% in relation to paper production volumes.
The overall electricity consumption of the Group is constantly well below the maximum levels defined by industry guidelines of 1,300 kWh/t, as shown in the following graph.

Today, the main Group production centres are more or less self-sufficient in terms of energy procurement.

In addition to co-generation systems, some of the Group’s mills, where suitable water resources are available, also use turbines to generate hydroelectric energy, thereby using a renewable resource such as water.

RAW MATERIALS

Pulp is the main raw material used to make paper.
Fedrigoni adheres to the Code of Ethics of the European paper industry and exclusively uses pulp from forests managed in accordance with sustainable forestry schemes regulated and recognized on an international scale, especially FSC®, in terms of both traceabilitỳ (Chain of Custody2) and controlled origin of wood (Controlled Wood3).
Other non-fibrous raw and ancillary materials, such as mineral fillers, dyes and binders are carefully selected to ensure the smallest possible environmental impact as well as maximum safety in terms of regards industrial processes and products for end consumers.
Fedrigoni has decided to adhere to labels and marks of a voluntary nature accompanying products to confirm their specific ecological and/or safety attributes in compliance with the ISO 14021 standard.
